Arizona I, acrylic and ink on canvas by Addison Karl
SUMMER RAIN

16 May – 20 September 2025  Addison Karl

Multi-disciplinary artist Addison Karl presents canvases and drawings that offer a counter-narrative to the blank slate mythology of North America. From the desert heat of Arizona to the saturated greens of Oklahoma the paintings hum with the quiet resonance of stewardship, of land as relation not resource.

Paired with his landscapes are ink drawings of imagined yet remembered architecture – Collective memory of Chickasaw and Choctaw towns mapped into earth over centuries.

In this third and final phase of the Summer Rain exhibition Addison’s images are presented alongside the abstract canvases of Chickasaw artist BILLY HENSLEY. Many of these richly textured paintings are embellished with his Indigenous beadwork patterns stitched into the canvas.

All the artists featured in the Summer Rain exhibition over recent months have ancestral roots in the Southeastern Woodlands region of the US. Their ancestors were forcibly relocated to Oklahoma.

Summer Rain is a convergence, a weather system made of colour, memory and place. It reminds us that even in silence, the land is still speaking and sometimes, all it takes is rain to re-grow its knowledge systems.
